पत्रकार सुरेश रजकको मृत्यु शंकास्पद, उच्चस्तरीय छानबिन आयोग गठनको माग

विराटनगर– नेपाल पत्रकार महासंघले चैत १५ मा तीनकुनेमा राजावादी प्रदर्शनका क्रममा मृत्यु भएका पत्रकार सुरेश रजकको घटनालाई गम्भीर रूपमा लिँदै उच्चस्तरीय छानबिन समिति गठनको माग गरेको छ। महासंघले गठन गरेको अध्ययन समितिले रजकको मृत्यु ‘शंकास्पद’ भएको निष्कर्षसहितको प्रतिवेदन महासंघलाई बुझाएको हो।

महासंघका उपाध्यक्ष उमिद प्रसाद बागचन्दको संयोजकत्वमा गठित ७ सदस्यीय समितिले तयार पारेको प्रतिवेदनमा घटनासँग सम्बन्धित महत्वपूर्ण प्रश्नहरू उठाइएका छन्। प्रतिवेदनमा भनिएको छ, ‘आगो लगाइएको कोठामा अन्तिमसम्म रजक मात्रै रहेको देखिने भिडियो कुन समयको हो? त्यहाँका दृश्य खिच्नेहरू को–को थिए? आगो लागेपछि सबै भाग्दा रजक किन भाग्न सकेनन्? किन उनी मात्रै बाहिर निस्किन सकेनन?’

त्यस्तै रजकले प्रयोग गर्दै आएका क्यामेराको अवशेष किन फेला परेन? उनका दुई मोबाइलमध्ये एक पूर्णरूपमा जलेको हो कि कसैले लगेको हो? कतै प्रदर्शनकारीहरूले आफूहरूलाई खिचिएको देखेपछि रजकमाथि आक्रमण गरेकाले उनी त्यहाँबाट भाग्न नसकेको त होइन? भन्ने प्रश्नहरू पनि प्रतिवेदनमा उठाइएको छ।

यी गम्भीर प्रश्नहरूको जवाफ खोज्न ढिलाइ गर्न नहुने ठहर गर्दै प्रतिवेदनमा ‘उच्चस्तरीय छानबिन समिति तत्काल गठन गर्नुपर्ने’ सुझाव दिइएको छ। साथै, रजकको हत्यामा संलग्न हुन सक्ने शंकास्पद व्यक्तिहरूलाई विपक्षी बनाइ महासंघले ज्यानसम्बन्धी कसुरमा किटानी जाहेरी दिनुपर्ने समेत उल्लेख गरेको छ।

प्रतिवेदनमा घटना भएका दिन सञ्चारमाध्यमहरू र पत्रकारहरूलाई लक्षित गरी सुनियोजित आक्रमण भएको आशंका गरिएको छ। ‘राजसंस्थाको पक्षमा नउभिएको र गणतन्त्रको पक्षमा वकालत गरेको आरोपमा सञ्चारमाध्यमहरूप्रति आक्रोशित भीडले सो दिन तीनकुनेमा कार्यरत पत्रकारहरूलाई ‘टार्गेट’ बनाएको देखिन्छ,’ प्रतिवेदनमा भनिएको छ।

महासंघका अनुसार २०८१ मा कैलालीका पत्रकार सुरेश भुल र काठमाडौँका सुरेश रजकको हत्या भएको छ। २०५६ देखि अहिलेसम्म नेपालमा ३८ जना पत्रकारको हत्या भइसकेको तथ्य पनि प्रतिवेदनमा उल्लेख छ। त्यस्तै, २०८१ वैशाख २२ देखि २०८२ वैशाख १७ सम्मको अवधिमा प्रेस स्वतन्त्रता हननका ७३ घटना रेकर्ड भएका छन्, जसमा १५१ पत्रकार तथा ५ सञ्चार संस्था पीडित भएका छन्।

पत्रकारहरू भौतिक आक्रमण र पेसागत असुरक्षाको त्रासमा काम गरिरहेको उल्लेख गर्दै प्रतिवेदनले पछिल्लो समय सामाजिक सञ्जालमा गलत सूचना तथा भ्रामक प्रचारमार्फत पत्रकारिता माथि आक्रमण हुने प्रवृत्ति मौलाएको चेतावनी दिएको छ। त्यस्तै पत्रकारहरूले साधारण दुर्घटना बीमा बिना जोखिम मोलेर फिल्डमा काम गर्नुपर्ने बाध्यता रहेको उल्लेख गर्दै सरकार तथा मिडिया सञ्चालकहरूले पत्रकारको सुरक्षामा लगानी नगरेको गुनासो गरिएको छ। महासंघलाई बुझाइएको प्रतिवेदनमा प्रेस स्वतन्त्रता संरक्षण, पत्रकार सुरक्षाको सुनिश्चितता, सामाजिक सञ्जालको दुरुपयोग नियन्त्रण र नीतिगत सुधारका लागि तत्काल ध्यान दिनुपर्ने आवश्यकता औंल्याइएको छ।

FNJ study report raises serious questions, recommends filing a formal complaint naming potential suspects

Biratnagar — The Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) has demanded the formation of a high-level investigation committee to probe the death of journalist Suresh Rajak, who died during a royalist demonstration at Tinkune on March 28. A study committee formed by FNJ concluded that Rajak’s death appears suspicious and submitted a detailed report recommending further investigation.

The seven-member committee, led by FNJ Vice President Umid Prasad Bagchand, raised multiple unanswered questions surrounding Rajak’s death in the report. It states: 'What time was the video showing Rajak as the last person in the burning room recorded? Who filmed that scene? Who else was present until the end? When everyone fled the fire, why didn’t Rajak manage to escape? Why was he the only one who could not get out?'

The report also questions why the remains of Rajak’s camera were never found, whether one of his two mobile phones was destroyed or taken, and whether he was possibly attacked by demonstrators after being seen filming the scene. 'Was he prevented from fleeing because of an assault aimed at silencing him?' the report speculates.

Given these serious concerns, the report calls for an immediate formation of a high-level probe panel. It further recommends that FNJ file a formal legal complaint (kitani jaheri) against suspicious individuals under homicide charges.

The report notes that the events of that day seemed to reflect a targeted assault on the press. 'It appears that journalists, particularly those affiliated with mainstream outlets, were deliberately targeted during the demonstration due to perceived bias against the monarchy and support for republicanism,' the report says.

According to FNJ, two journalists—Suresh Bhul of Kailali and Suresh Rajak of Kathmandu—were murdered in 2081 B.S. (2024-25). With these cases, the total number of journalists killed in Nepal since 1999 has reached 38.

Between April 2024 and April 2025, FNJ recorded 73 press freedom violations, affecting 151 journalists and 5 media houses. The report underscores growing physical and professional threats facing journalists, exacerbated by technological shifts and the misuse of social media.

It warns of increasing trends of misinformation, defamation, and threats against journalists, especially those exposing wrongdoing. 'Some individuals are using online platforms to discredit, threaten, and attack the media when their wrongdoings are exposed,' the report notes.

The report also highlights the lack of even basic accident insurance for journalists working in the field, including during disasters, riots, and high-risk assignments. 'Neither the government has made any policy provisions, nor have media owners invested in journalists’ safety,' it states.

The report urges urgent legal and policy reforms to address the growing challenges to press freedom and the safety of journalists in Nepal.
